Original or reproduction — read this before you buy

We are selling this as a reproduction, not as a 1925 original. Original stone lithographs of this poster, printed by Lit. Doyen in Turin, measure approximately 140 × 99 cm. This sheet is roughly half that size, which rules out the original printing. The signature and the printer's mark are part of the reproduced image, not applied by hand.

We tell you this plainly because plenty of sellers do not. If you want the original, it exists and it costs considerably more — see below.

About the artist and the image

Biscaretti was an industrial designer and a founder of the Museo dell'Automobile in Turin. He produced only a handful of posters, most of them for the motor industry, between 1920 and 1930. This one, made for a crowded market of aperitifs and anise liqueurs, is described by specialists as one of the most famous and whimsical posters in advertising history — the monkey did what the copy could not.

How we arrived at the price

We would rather show our working than ask you to take a number on trust.

• Genuine 1925 stone lithographs of this poster, linen-backed and in the full 140 × 99 cm format, are offered by specialist dealers in the region of USD 3,800 to 6,000.
• An offset lithograph in the original format realised USD 1,875 at auction against a USD 1,000–1,500 estimate.
• This piece is neither: a later reproduction at roughly half the original size. Its value is decorative rather than collectable, and it sits in the same bracket as any well-framed reproduction poster of comparable size and condition.
• In its favour: it is already framed and glazed, the colours are clean and strong, and it is a genuinely great image.

On that basis we have priced it at AED 750. If you are looking for an original, tell us — we come across them and can keep an eye out.

Condition

Used. Sheet clean and bright with no tears or foxing visible through the glass. The frame shows knocks, paint loss and rubbing to the edges and corners, consistent with age and handling. Photographed as it is, unretouched.
